Neville Sawyer is Executive Chairman of Ampcontrol Pty Ltd, a manufacturer of electrical and electronic equipment used in mining and industry. The company has three sites in the Newcastle (NSW) region, workshops in Queensland and offices in Sydney, Western Australia, Victoria and Kentucky, USA.

He has wide experience in exporting. His company designed and manufactured equipment that has been exported to New Zealand, Hong Kong, South Africa, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and the USA.

Mr Sawyer is also Immediate Past President of Australian Business Limited. In that role he has established a regional issues task force to identify key issues of concern to regional business and develop strategies to address them.

Mr Sawyer was elected to the ACCI Board in November 2000.

David Gray & Co Pty Limited

David Gray is the Managing Director of David Gray & Co Pty Limited, a Western Australian manufacturing and distribution company involved in the formulation and blending of chemicals for the agricultural and household markets in Australia and overseas.

Mr Gray is a Past President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Western Australia and an active member of the Small Business Council and Manufacturing Industry Council. He is also currently a member of the ACCI's Taxation Committee. He is also a member of the Prime Minister's Science Engineering & Innovation Council (PMSEIC).

He is an industry representative on the West Australian Minister for Health's Poisons Advisory Committee.

He is the Chairman of ACCI's Small Business Committee and Deputy Chairman of the Australian Made Campaign.

Mr Peter O'Brien

Mr O'Brien is Managing Director of Oceanis Australia Pty Ltd, trading as UnderWater World Sunshine Coast; Parkthorn Pty Ltd; Parkthorn Properties Pty Ltd, trading as The Wharf, Sunshine Coast; Melbourne Underwater World Pty Ltd, trading as the Melbourne Aquarium; Busan Aquarium; and various themed tourism complexes in north Asia and in Eastern Europe and U.A.E.

Mr O'Brien is also President of Victorian Employers' Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Deputy Chairman of Melbourne Chamber of Commerce and Board Member of Ruyton Girls School, Kew.

He has held a wide range of Board appointments in catering, tourism industry including consulting to major venues such as the Sydney Olympics and Stadium Australia.

Mr O'Brien was appointed to the ACCI Board in October 2001.

Ernst & Young

Neil Summerson is non executive company director of public and private companies and chairs a number of boards and committees for Queensland State and Local Governments. He is a consultant to Ernst & Young. He was the former Senior Partner of Ernst & Young - Queensland and remains a consultant to the company. From 1992 to 1996 he was the Managing Partner of that firm in Queensland.

He is Chairman of Brisbane Water Advisory Board of Management, a Director of Brisbane City Council Holding Entity Board, a Director of the Australian Made Campaign Limited, a Director of AmerAlia Inc (NASDAQ Listed Company), a Director of Bank of Queensland Ltd, a Director of Leyshon Group of Companies and a Director of Commerce Queensland.

Mr Summerson is also a Director of the Uniting Church Hospital's Board, President of the Yeronga Services Club Inc, Immediate Past Chairman of the Queensland State Council of Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, Trustee of the Cancer Research Foundation, Trustee of the Foundation for Gambling Studies.

Mr Peter Hendy
Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry

Peter Hendy took up his position as the Chief Executive of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry on 3 June 2002.

Besides his directorship of ACCI, Peter is a director of the Standards Australia's Board, a director of the Australian Made Campaign Limited and of the National Business Action Fund. He is a member of the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) CEO's Industry Forum and is a governor of the National Institute of Labour Studies.  He is a councilor of the ACT Defence Reserves Support Council, a member of a number of Commonwealth Government committees, including the Welfare Reform Consultative Forum; the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Advisory Group; and the National Small Business Forum.  He was also Chairman of the executive Steering Committee of the Government-Business Roundtable on Climate Change. In August 2002 he was a member of the government delegation to the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development.

Peter has served with distinction in public administration and policy development at Federal and State levels, for both Liberal and Labor Governments.  He was Chief of Staff to the Minister for Defence and Chief of Staff to the Ministers for Workplace Relations and Education.  He has very extensive experience in a broad range of business-related policy issues and has been directly involved in policy negotiations and implementation at State, national and international levels. He has also been a senior economic consultant in the private sector where he worked on a range of economic and strategic policy.

Peter holds a Bachelor of Economics (First Class Honours) from the University of Queensland and has published various papers and articles on public policy issues.

He is married to Bronwyn, has a son and a daughter and they live in Queanbeyan, New South Wales.

Mr Nicholas Begakis AM

Nick Begakis is Chairman and part owner of Australian category leader, Bellis Fruit Bars, an Adelaide based manufacturer and exporter of dried fruit based confectionery.

In 2000, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for his work in the creation and development of enterprise, the promotion of exports and services to the community.

Mr Begakis also Chairs award winning exporter, Atmospheric Radar Systems Pty Ltd and not for profit, Enterprise Development Incorporated, which is involved in the creation of entrepreneurs.

He Chairs the Women's and Children's Hospital Foundation (SA), supporting medical research, is a member of the Multicultural Forum and a Director of SA Business Vision 2010, which is about creating the desired future for SA.

He is a Director of Business SA, on Council of the Flinders University of SA, Chairs the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics based at the Adelaide University's Waite Campus with 3 research nodes nationally and has been Chairman of an Executive Connection Roundtable comprising 15 CEO Members.  

Mr Begakis is an adviser to Government through his involvement on several government boards, including two terms as a member of the Environment Protection Authority (SA), as Chair of the Horticulture Industry Development Board (SA) reporting to the Agriculture Minister, as a current member of the Premier's Food Council (SA) and currently as Chair of the Council for International Trade and Commerce SA Inc, reporting to the Trade Minister.

Mr Begakis is a past Vice President of the Institute of Company Directors (SA & NT) and has had over 30 years experience in Manufacturing Industries, Merchant Banking and Venture Capital, Mergers and Acquisitions and company turnaround roles.

 

Mr Owen Brown OAM

Owen Brown OAM is the Managing Director and Company Secretary of Brown's Motors Pty. Ltd. He commenced his working life in a small but successful family business, manufacturing prams. In the early 1950s, the business expanded to also be involved in the service station, crash repair, spare parts and towing industries.

Mr Brown joined the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC) in 1956 as a retail motor trades employer. In 1995, he was elected President of the VACC and is the only President to hold this position for three consecutive years. During his time as President, Mr Brown, also acted as the Executive Director of the VACC

In 1996, Mr Brown was appointed Chairman of the Federal Industrial Council of the MTAA, which is the national organisation of the retail motor trades.

Mr Brown has been a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers since 1988, the Small Business Victoria Round Table since 1996 and a member of the Small Business Committee of ACCI since 1995, a Director of Fortis Insurance Limited 1995 - 1999 and a Director of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry since 1997.

He is a Life Member of Lions International and a fellow of the Australian Institute of Management.

Mr Brown was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2001 for services to the automotive retail industry, and to the community, particularly through Lions International.

 

Mr Roger du Blęt AM

Roger du Blęt is Managing Director of Reduct Pty Ltd, consultants to the Development Industry.

He chairs ACCI's Environment Committee and is Chair of the Small Business Coalition.

He is also the current chair of the Federal Government's National Small Business Forum and consultative forum that meets regularly with the Minister for Small Business and Tourism. He was also a member of the Prime Minister's "Bell Committee" Small Business Deregulation Task Force.

Mr du Blęt was founding Chair and Managing Director of Airtrain Citylink Limited, the private sector proponent to fund, build and operate a rail link between Brisbane Airport, Brisbane and Robina.

He is a Past National President of HIA and Past State President of HIA South Australia and HIA Queensland, a Life Member of the Housing Industry Association, and formerly Chair of HIA Insurances Ltd.

Mr du Blęt is a member of the SEQ2001 Regional Coordination Committee representing Business and Industry, Chair of the Non-Government Sector Committee for the SEQ2001 Regional Coordination Committee, a Steering Committee Member of the South East Queensland Economic Development Strategy, and a Steering Committee Member of the Queensland Regional Economic Development Forum.

 

Mr Robert Gerard AO

Robert Gerard joined the firm of Gerard Industries Pty Ltd, a company with diverse interests in electrical manufacturing, wine, printing and forestry in 1963. He is currently Chairman and Managing Director. The firm employs over 3300 people in Australia, and also has significant offshore interests.

He is a Board member of Allianz Australia Insurance Group, Chairman of the Awards Committee - SA, and Chairman of National Friends Committee of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award in Australia. He is also Chairman of the Australian Made Campaign and Chairman of the Royal Adelaide Hospital Development Appeal. He is a Member of the Board of the Reserve Bank of Australia.

Mr Gerard was appointed as an Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia in the Queen's Birthday Honour's List in June 1999 for services to the South Australian domestic and export industries, to youth (particularly with the Duke of Edinburgh's Award), to the community, and as a sponsor of cultural and sporting activities.

 

Mr Graham Heilbronn

Graham Heilbronn is the founder of The Heilbronn Group (THG) and has been Chairman of The board since 1999. Prior to this appointment he was the Managing Director. Graham is a licensed surveyor registered with the Surveyors Boards of Queensland and New Zealand. In addition to this, he holds a graduate diploma in Urban and Regional Planning from the Queensland University of Technology (1976). With over 25 years of experience managing and marketing the company, Graham brings extensive knowledge of management and futures thinking to THG.

He is an industry visionary, having been the first to market with a number of service innovations. One such example was the NPA property and investment audit group in 1997. Graham is respected as an effective board member and committee member of public companies and business and development industry associations. Of the many positions he has held, Graham was a Board Member of the Stanwell Corporation Electricity Board, Chairman of the Queensland Chamber of Commerce and Industry International Trade and Commerce Council, President of the Association of Consulting Surveyors (Qld) and a member of the Surveyors Board of Queensland. He is currently Chairman of the Board of Bridgewater Development Capital Fund Ltd, and President of Commerce Queensland, the largest employer organisation in the state.

 

Mr Richard Holyman

 

Mr Tony Howarth AO

Tony Howarth lives in Western Australia and has had over 35 years in the Banking and Finance Sector. He was Managing Director of Challenge Bank Limited and more recently managed the integration of Westpac’s Western Australian business and Challenge Bank. He is a non-executive director of a number of publicly listed companies as well as having an active involvement in many community activities. He is currently CEO of Hartley's.

Mr Howarth in the Chairman of AlintaGas Limited; a director of Mermaid Marine Australia Limited and St John of God Health Care Governing Board. He is also a Director of Rio-Tinto Limited’s Western Australia Future Fund.

He is Chair of the University of Western Australia’s Graduate School of Management, Deputy Chair of the Major Performing Arts Board of the Australia Council and a member of the Prime Ministers Community Business Partnership. He is also on the Western Australian Government's State Development Forum and a Councilor for the Australian Institute of Company Directors in Western Australia.

Mr Howarth is the Immediate Past President of Chamber of Commerce and Industry Western Australia.

 

Mr Sam Walsh

Sam Walsh is Chief Executive of Comalco Limited and Rio Tinto Aluminium. He is also Chairman of Rio Tinto Japan Limited.

Prior to his appointment to Comalco in March 2001 Mr Walsh was Vice-President of Rio Tinto Iron Ore responsible for Hamersley Iron and Robe River Mining following his appointments as Managing Director - Operations and Managing Director - Sales and Marketing of Hamersley.

His previous Rio Tinto postings were as Managing Director of Comalco Foundry Products and CRA Industrial Components, with responsibility for Iron, Steel and Aluminium Foundries in Australia, USA and Chile.

Mr Walsh has a Bachelor of Commerce from Melbourne University, and has completed a Fellowship Program at Kettering University in Michigan.

Mr Walsh is a Vice Chairman of the International Institute of Aluminium, President of the Australian Aluminium Council, and Vice-President of the Australian Mines and Metals Association.

His is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Purchasing and Materials Management, the Australian Institute of Management and the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

Mr Walsh was appointed to the ACCI Board in March 2003.

Mr Rohan Jeffs

Rohan Jeffs is currently the General Manager Corporate Services & Company Secretary for Woolworths Limited and has been since 1986.

Mr Jeffs qualifications include a B.A., LLB., LLM (Syd Univ); also a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales; Solicitor of the High Court of Australia.

Previously Mr Jeffs has been a Lawyer in private practice for 8 years; Corporate Lawyer - Oil Industry 10 years (Ampol Ltd); Corporate Lawyer - Retail Industry 17 years (Woolworths Ltd).

He is currently Chief Counsel for Woolworths; Head of Superannuation/ Government relations/Shareholder relations. Other Responsibilities for Mr Jeffs include Director of REST- Retail Industry Superannuation Fund - (10 years); REST Investment Committee Member (10 years); Member of Federal Govt. Advisory Group (B.R.A.G.) on Review of Aust Corporations Law 1998-2000.

 

Mr Bill Scott

Bill Scott is the Victorian President and National Vice President of The Pharmacy Guild of Australia. He is also Chair of the National Health Economics Committee, who successfully concluded the negotiation of the Third Community Pharmacy Agreement. Mr Scott has chaired committees on the Review of the Pharmacy Act, GST and Y2K. He also has an intimate knowledge of the financial management implications of the issues currently facing pharmacy.

Mr Scott is the Guild’s representative on the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry General Council and Deputy Chair of the MediConnect Development Working Group. He is also joint proprietor of three Quality Care accredited community pharmacies in Melbourne. He is also a member of the Bundoora Extended Care Advisory Committee and a Director of Sigma Company Limited.

A Branch Committee member for the past 17 years, Mr Scott is a strong believer in making a contribution to his profession and to the advancement of retail pharmacy. A strong advocate of pharmacy’s critical role in contributing to the health and well-being of the community, Bill would like to see more young and vibrant pharmacists taking an active role in retail pharmacy and the Guild.
