Policy Framework:
Infrastructure is vital to Australia, now and in the future. We must continuously
improve our national infrastructure if we are to:
- Improve Australia's economic performance and achieve economic growth
- Maintain and enhancing our international competitiveness
- Provide adequate education and training
- Safeguard our national security
- Enhance our built and natural environment
- Maintain our community's social cohesion
Policy Objectives:
- Continuous improvement of infrastructure
- Encourage technological change in all areas related to infrastructure
- Ensure the private sector plays a major role in financing, designing, building,
operating and maintaining infrastructure
- Remove legislative and taxation obstacles to increased private sector activity
- Ensure that all infrastructure projects are subject to a proper cost benefit analysis
which takes into account all economic, social and environmental considerations
- Public spending on infrastructure should occur in a fiscally responsible manner
- Make certain that equitable and sustainable risk allocation models are developed
for each project undertaken by the private sector
